How does social media help brands?

–Research shows that social media is increasingly a platform consumers use to express their loyalty to their favourite brands and products, and many seek to reap benefits from brands for helping promote their products. Among those who share their brand experiences through social media, at least 41 percent say they do so to receive discounts. When researching products, social media users are likely to trust the recommendations of their friends and family most.

–This impacts the sales of the brand and the consumer awareness as social media spreads so quickly.

Why do we use social media?

The History of social media

Past and present of social media

The first recognizable social media site, Six Degrees, was created in 1997. It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999, the first blogging sites became popular, creating a social media sensation that’s still popular today.

The early 2000's MySpace and LinkedIn became popular after the massive outburst of social media that six degrees started. Most school kids became hooked on MySpace as it was the 'in' thing to do for the younger's, guessing that the thought of having your own webpage that u could design yourself was 'cool' and everyone had one of course so you had to have one too. Nowadays hardly anyone has MySpace and especially my generation are very ashamed and embarrassed of their awful childhood MySpace page which is amusing to think about now when you look back at the pictures.

YouTube came out in 2005, creating an entirely new way for people to communicate and share with each other across great distances. This is a big success as YouTube is still being used all over the world every single day and by the looks of its success I don't think it will ever get old and not used anymore.

By 2006, Facebook and Twitter both became available to users throughout the world. These sites remain some of the most popular social networks on the Internet. Other sites like Tumblr, Spotify, Foursquare and Pinterest began popping up to fill specific social networking niches.

I looked at WGSN at the reports on social media to see their view on the on trend social media and how it is portrayed in the fashion community.

Social media is a big thing nowadays but personally I think going 'Ghost' is a bit extreme as capturing the moment in a picture is like collecting memories and sure some people would rather keep them for themselves but why not post them and share your memories with your friends. It's always good to share the memories, why not?

Social Media

Social media suicide is when someone deletes all their social media profiles all at once as it is the new niche thing to do. WGSN say three million teens have deserted Facebook over the last three years, as the CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that “Coolness is done for us”
